Poor little Bob was rushed to our care with a dangerous bowel obstruction after swallowing an unusual object... a TOWEL!
Bob has an unfortunate habit of chewing on the towel covering his bedding. When his family removed the towel in concern for his safety, Bob conducted a daring heist to steal his brother's towel through the bars of his crate. After discovering Bob snacking on shredded towel remains, his family rushed him to our clinic for immediate treatment. A preliminary x-ray showed a large obstruction in his bowel that would require surgery to remove.
Dr Kiri took charge of Bob's surgery, and successfully removed the FIVE pieces of towel that were causing the blockage. Brave Bob recovered very well from his ordeal, and returned home to his family after a weekend stay with us. By all reports Bob was incredibly "relieved" to be free of his material meal, and proudly demonstrated so the moment he arrived home!
Bowel obstructions are a surprisingly common issue, and pose a serious threat to your pet's health if left untreated. Obstruction most often occurs from swallowing foreign objects (such as socks, bones or toys) that cannot break down within the digestive system and are too large to be passed naturally. These objects prevent your pet's regular food and liquids from passing through the gastrointestinal tract, and can cause serious complications such as rupture or twisting of the intestines. There is a serious risk of death without veterinary intervention.
If you notice changes in your pet such as loss of appetite, vomiting, weakness, bloating or discomfort, seek immediate veterinary attention to explore the cause. To discuss any concerns with your pet's health or wellbeing, please give us a call on (02) 6977 1451
